The August 12, 2026 CLE Session with Judge West will discuss various aspects of jurisdiction, including (1) the types of cases which can be heard by courts of limited jurisdiction versus district courts (and which rules of procedure apply); (2) the differences between criminal cases, civil cases, and small claims cases; and (3) standards for how appeals are taken by the district courts and the Montana Supreme Court.

Judge Rick West
Justice of the Peace, Gallatin County Justice Court
Judge Rick West has served as an elected Justice of the Peace for the Gallatin County Justice Court for over 16 years, and has extensive experience in handling civil, small claims, and misdemeanor criminal matters. Prior to his service as Justice of the Peace, Judge West worked as a criminal investigator for the Montana Public Defenders Office and served as a deputy sheriff for the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office.
